Strange, this was not the first time such a dream had occurred. Vaan had often dreamt for his former mistress, the woman who healed his broken heart. Jane, his darling and brief holder of his heart and soul was once again standing before him.
Mist was swirling around her feet, caressing her long and nimble legs much like a lover would. Unlike many of the other times she had appeared, she was not frowning but smiling broadly at him. Before Vaan could even move, the scene around him changed, from complete and utter darkness which went on forever to a rather familiar scene.
Greenery surrounded him, creeping ivy grew up the brick wall in the distance, trying to reach for the heavens. Willows hung in breeze, the wind whistled through their branches causing them to sway, to appear as if they were dancing with an invisible partner. Colour intermingled around him, Vaan knew where he was. This was Jane’s garden, the place he had locked away when she had died, locked away a piece of heart in this beautiful place which she had poured her heart into keeping alive.
A soft laughter carried on the wind, dancing around him urging him to enter, enter a place he had refused to enter, locking his Jane’s memory away from the world. “Come, come to me” The disembodied voice called, pulling at his heart strings. His feet had a mind of their own, as the head and heart resisted, the body fought back taking control as he entered the garden.
Crossing the threshold, through the archway onto the bed of grass which felt like silk as it slide between his toes. Oh the days he had spent in this sanctuary with Jane, watching her grow and nurture the plants around him, each flower, each tree and seed she placed within the soil. Each one she loved with her whole heart, urging them to grow tall and strong.
“Vaan, come to me” A clear, light, and pleasant voice broke through his thoughts, echoing in his ears, he searched for the source of the voice but his brother wolf knew already who was summoning him into their loving embrace in this sacred place. “Where are you?” He asked, his own voice filled with curiosity not only that he sounded younger. What was this place? And what was it doing to him? This was impossible but in dreams, anything was possible.
“Think back Vaan, think back to the days of our love” The sultry voice giggled, it was eliciting a strong sexual desire within, causing the blood to rush downwards. His eyes widened in shock, Jane, his Jane was calling to him. Memories soon flooded his vision, before his eyes the past played like a film upon the silver screen.
He watched his younger self embrace Jane, his dark haired beauty underneath the oak that sat beside the glittering koi pond. This day had changed everything, it had been the moment their love they shared exploded with such passion and desire. It was the day she had become his official mistress. Shaking away the memory, he knew where she would be waiting for him underneath their oak tree.
The moment he clapped eyes upon her form, he lost his ability to speak altogether. Her waist length chocolate hair hung framing her heart shaped face, she looked like a wild nymph sitting beneath the tree. “Jane” Vaan found it still hard to speak, Jane always could take his breath away with such ease.
“Vaan, my darling, my king I have missed you” She smiled lovingly at the man before him, “Come sit beside me, we have much to speak of” Vaan did not have to be told twice, quickly he crossed the short distance between them. Sitting beside his former lover, filled the tired King with contentment and a sense of happiness he had not felt since her sudden death. “To be here with you, makes me wonder, have I died and gone to heaven?” He asked, knowing that this was unlikely, there was still so much for him to do, so much for him to live for.
“No silly, this is dream and we have little time” Her voice was filled with such sorrow, their time together had come and gone. This moment would disappear in a blink of an eye when it was time for him to return to the waking world. “How is our son?” She asks, missing her little boy dearly, Richard was her little love, her little piece of Vaan. There was no hatred in her body, she could not hate the one responsible for taking her away from her son and lover so soon.
“Richard, he is happily married to Rachel” He did not want to tell Jane that their son was a workaholic, trapped in that small office of his most hours of the day, that he often fell asleep at his desk and that his wife would have to come and collect him. However he knew that he could not lie to Jane with a straight face.
“”Jane, he is become a workaholic, hardly spending time with wife and two young daughters. I hate to worry you” He told her truthfully, not wanting to meet her beautiful, hazel eyes. Fearing that she might be disappointed in his actions, well lack of. “Vaan, we can’t control our children’s fate even though we do try” She started “I know life would have been different if I was there to help, you did your best love” She comforted him, knowing him all too well.
“I should have done more, Richard needed me and I just shut that door tight. I let my grief consume me” He guiltily admitted, the days after her death had almost killed him, shattering his healed heart into a million pieces. Jane did not frown, she did not sigh but moved to place her hands to cup his cheeks. “Everyone has the right to grieve, we grieve differently. Do not blame yourself for what has happened but think on what you can do next” Jane had always offered the best advice for any situation. She was intelligent, this was one of the reason Vaan chased after her, desiring both intelligent conversation and debate but also having her in his bed.
She was his best friend whilst being his most passionate lover in the dead of the night. There was more to Jane than most courtiers saw. You could not judge a book by it’s cover especially not this one. “Speak to Richard, speak about me and share the good and bad. It will help” Vaan smiled softly at her as her thumbs stroked his cheeks in circular motions.
The sun had begun to rise, light was starting to blind Vaan. It was getting hard to hear and see Jane’s beautiful face and soft spoken voice. “Sadly you must go love, return to the waking court. They need you” No, not yet just a little more time was what he wanted. This was unfair, why could he not just stay here with his beloved. “No, please I want to..” His words were cut short by her petal soft red lips. Kissing her was still heavenly, the way they fit against his like they were made for one another.
“You can’t Vaan, Dawn needs you” She reminded her as she broke the brief yet loving kiss. “She loves you, you love her. Our time is over darling but your and hers has just begun” Jane said, smiling gently, her dimples lifted at the very mention of the Captain she once knew. “I approve of your choice my king” Her voice was starting to fade into the darkness, just like the garden around them. Vaan thought of Dawn, she was nothing like Jane but he could not compare the two, it would be unfair to try and mould her into something she was not.
Dawn held his heart now, he knew she would keep it safe. Jane was right, he did love her dearly and would give her his heart completely. Light consumed his vision, lifting him back to the world he knew so well, back to Dawn and his sons. A new chapter in the king’s life had begun, whilst another had finally closed. Jane would forever hold a special place in his heart but their time was over.
A new day had begun, his heart felt lighter but fuller than when he closed his eyes the previous evening. With a smile on his lips and a spring in his step, Vaan was finally ready to face the world with Dawn by his side.
