Frustrated, Vaan was seriously frustrated. First the certain nobles had been speaking ill of members of his family when they had been in hearing range of where he had been seated. He had left not long after that.
When he had reached his quarters, he found his mistress Adrienne spread across his bed, wearing next to nothing. Not that he was not happy to see her laying there but the mood was not there, the passion that once had burned so strongly between them had cooled. An argument had quickly broken out.
Adrienne had screamed at the top of her lungs at him about not spending time with her anymore. His frustration had quickly spiked through the roof. Vaan could take so much from his mistress but this had been too much. His whore had gone too far this time "Adrienne enough!" He proclaimed, his voice no longer calm and collected but cold and vicious.
Adrienne quickly shut up, her face dropped. She looked completely frightened of him and what he might do next. Adrienne drove to the edge, he wanted nothing more to hit her but that would solve nothing. Just created more problems in their relationship. He needed to get out, escape from her and this room.
Turning on his heel, Vaan left the room slamming the door behind him. Leaving his mistress upset, angry and unsatisfied. He needed a place where he knew he would be alone, in order to calm down and vent his feelings without someone listening in.
The library seemed like the perfect place, especially at this time of the night. Everyone would either be asleep in their own beds or in someone else's. It would just be him and the many shelves of books, the smell of the ink and paper was what he needs. It was simply an escape from the frustrated, worked up King.

Today was supposed to have been an easy one for Dawn, it was suppose to have been the highlight of her week. The one day she could relax after four straight weeks of constantly watching over the royal family and the palace. In her mind, she had pictured herself having dinner with her family, relaxing on the beach…anything but being back at the palace. In truth, she wanted to slit someone’s throat open after what had reached her ears at her family’s home in the country to make her rush back to her station. A couple of guards had decided that since their leader wasn’t around to watch they could slack off and not report in for duty. Why did they insist on testing her after all these years? After 90 years as Captain where she took no shit from anyone, they should have realized by then how serious she was about protecting the royal family and the palace. Oh, she was going to murder someone if it was the last thing she did that evening. In the end, she had knocked the two morons around well enough to leave bruises on their bodies even after they healed. It was until after knocking the two guards around that Dawn had learned Vaan had held court making her sigh heavily. He had ever right to do so, but sometimes she wish he wouldn’t do so on the rare days she took off. A slight smile formed on her lips, as if he needed her there to protect him. The man was a fully grown Lycan with two sons who would watch his back, not to mention his fearless daughter in law. Yes, he had been safe in his own throne room without her. “They had a fight.” “Did you hear it?” “I’ve never heard someone yell so loud before.” “He stormed out of there in a hurry.” Those few sentences made Dawn pause in her stride thinking the worst of course. It was always best to think the worse about something, that way when you learned nothing had really happened life went on like nothing happened. Taking a deep breath as she passed Vaan’s room, she easily picked up on Adrienne’s fear but the King’s scent had long since dissipated. Sighing, her work was done, she had fixed the too slackers back in their place and now it was time to return home. Spotting the nearest clock, she knew she couldn’t go home since by the time she got there the Captain would have to turn around to come back to the palace. Her boots once more clicked over the tiles as she went on the hunt for a place to settle down until dawn. Stopping in her steady pace, her nose picked up the too familiar scent of Vaan. Out of impulse, her legs began to move on their own in his direction until she turned the corner to find him outside the library. She didn’t want to sneak up on him, not if from her understanding of what had occurred between him and Adrienne was correct. “Your Highness.” Dawn bowed while making sure her voice was a little lower than it was naturally meant to be, she always made sure to do so. It made her wonder when the last time she had used her natural voice around anyone was.

The sound of boots clicking towards him, alerting him that he no longer was alone outside the library. Normally simply he would ignore them, such enter the sanctuary of the library and read to his heart content. However this was ordinary courtier heading his direction, the scent of alerted him of who exactly it was. The sound of her voice confirmed it.
It was his ever faithful captain and personal guard Dawn. She was one of the few lycans here at court, he could completely trust with his life and his secrets. The others were his son Richard, his daughter in law Rachel and Lord Arawn Frost. His chancellor well that was a different matter altogether. Not to be completely trust but his advice he often sought after in important matters of state.
Turning on his heel away from the door to face her. Since it was only them in this particular hallway, Vaan did not feel the need to be formal with her. "Good evening Captain" He greeted with his normal ever so slight smile. His voice however was not, it was lower and filled with angst and frustration.
Maybe a conversation with his guard would calm him down, she did have that affect on him. Never before had Vaan felt so drawn to one individual like he did with Dawn. For a moment Lady Jane past through his mind. He had been drawn to her but not like this. He felt like a moth as it drawn to light and heat of a flame. It was both dangerous and beautiful at the same time. Maybe he should try and spark a friendship with his fine example of a woman.
The king had his lover for now, but he lacked many true friends here at court. Most were after his crown and that would not do. However Vaan knew that he might not have a mistress for much longer if things carried on the way they were. Most days they argued nothing more, she left or he left the room.
Adrienne was slipping out of his favor very quickly. Her true nature was coming out, she was nothing more than a spoiled brat a gold digger cling to his arm like it was her lifeline. He was not a drip, feeding her every desire and need. Vaan would need to rethink his relationship with Mistress Boudoir, boundaries would have to reset and changed. Things needed to be changed for the better or he feared everything would be lost.

Dawn didn’t want to spoil King Vaan’s time alone, but she had a strange desire to be near him as often as possible. She put the blame on her natural protective nature which her younger twin sister had to deal with whenever she made sure Summer was doing ok. It didn’t help her position as the captain which entailed being Vaan’s silent body guard most of the time. She took her job seriously because it was a serious job, she hadn’t been born into a family who sat around shopping or toying with people’s lives like humans, vampires, or some Lycan nobles did. Nearly from birth, she knew she wouldn’t grow old being a sit at home mother even if that was a noble life. Dawn wanted to be something more and being Captain of the Guard defied the odds set against all female Lycans.
The moment the King’s eyes hit Dawn’s she felt like a young pup all over again, completely tongue tied and mindless to what she should do or how she should act. All she wanted to do was roll over at his feet and beg for attention which only caused her to feel horrible for thinking that way. It took a great deal of self preservation to not let it show on her face the amount the small look affected her. In her mind, it was rather pathetic allowing such a man to get to her in a way she’d never be allowed to think of him. For just thinking about him beyond that of her lord, Adrienne would skin her alive. That thought almost made the she-wolf howl in laughter trying to picture that whore getting more than a single scratch on her skin. If the day ever came that Adrienne took a shot at her, Dawn would eat her alive.
“I’m sorry to interrupt, but I heard there was some yelling a few moments ago.” She wouldn’t ask for details because that wasn’t her place. Besides, spreading rumors were for people who had too much time on their hands and Dawn barely had time between watching the King’s back and snapping the men into formation. All she wanted to make sure was that the gold digging whore hadn’t hurt him. There was no telling what Dawn would do if anything happened to Vaan. The way his voice held that cold demeanor to it would have caused a lesser woman to shudder, but she kept a calm expression on her face as if talking to an ill tempered child instead of the King who looked ready to start yelling soon. In these types of situations, she had learned the best thing was to keep calm and try not to stare in to his eyes for a long period of time unless he took it as a challenge.
Looking at the doors to the library, she moved and opened the door for the King and nodded slightly for him to go ahead of her. There was no denying the bizarre relationship they had, but for Dawn she liked it. It was simple and in her mind, aside from her twin and her brother in law, Vaan was a constant in her life that she had grown to like. “If you need anything, I’ll wait out here for awhile.” She had no doubt he wanted alone time and if he had fought with Adrienne the presence of another woman might simply set him off.

"No need to apologize Captain" He quickly replied, her interruption actually was welcomed. Dawn's appearance had taken his mind away from the problems he was having with his mistress. Adrienne was nothing like Rebeckah or Jane.
Rebeckah had been like summer, full of heat and passion. Jane oh his sweet Jane had been like spring, calm and full of life. Both had been two sides of the same coin but completely different at the same. They had both come into his life when he needed them to heal his ice cold heart.
"Another fight with Adrienne" He sighed, thinking of his dying relationship with his mistress. Soon it would all be over, a bittersweet end to a cooling union of two lycans both who wanted more from each other. She craved power, his throne and the crown that came with it.
He on the other hand desired love, someone to truly heal him of this grief, sadness and loneliness he felt weighting heavily upon his chest. Vaan did not want a whore but a Queen a true lady to sit and rule beside him. Adrienne Boudoir was not that person, this was becoming clearer with every passing day.
"I would actually like your company this evening" He told her with a soft yet slight smile. "After you" He told her, gesturing with his hand for her to enter through the door before him. Vaan waited, not moving from his spot. Dawn would enter the library first not him. Tonight he did not want to be the King but just Vaan, nothing more nothing less.

Hearing that it really had been a fight between him and Adrienne didn’t come as a surprise to Dawn. Sometimes rumors spread in the halls were true and it seemed the ones tonight had been true. It was obvious the passion that had once almost consumed both the King and Lady Adrienne was cooling at an alarming rate, not the rate a couple who’d been together cooled down to warm heat, but to the point of icy hatred for the other. She didn’t know the details and really didn’t want to know them to preserve what was left of her heart she hadn’t subconscious given to the King. Whatever the reason, she had grown to like him a lot, but the L-word was forbidden to ever cross her mind if she did that there would be no stopping the disappointment that would come when he finally settled on either his next mistress or his queen. Whichever he picked, Dawn would be there to protect the woman as long as she didn’t harm Vaan, it was her code and honor no amount of emotions on her part would damage that.
Dawn had been there to see both Queen Rebeckah and Lady Jane. She hadn’t gotten to know much about the queen before she vanished since Dawn had still been a mere guard at the time, but Lady Jane she had spoken to a few times when she became the new Captain. There was something about Lady Jane that drew people to her; it was sort of the same power Duchess Rachel had. The way they smiled could cause a whole crowd to stop and smile back even if they were having the worst day ever.
“I am sorry to hear that, Your Highness.”Because she really was. Dawn didn’t like seeing Vaan so down and low like he was. All because one woman was sucking him bone dry for her own gain. It was sad how even with just the two of them; Dawn always found it hard to not address Vaan properly. One slip up could lead to nobles questioning her seriousness about being Captain. However, when she was too serious they simple said behind her back she never had sex or loosened up. Of those two options, she was much happier with them thinking she never had a sex life. Being thought of as a slacker or a bum while trying to protect the King wasn’t acceptable in her book.
“I would be honored.” A faint blush over took her cheeks when she was gestured to move ahead of Vaan. There was a good reason she never spoke to many nobles, they were snobby most of the time and used any information they learned to turn it against you. She wished she could let someone in aside from her own family, but it was hard. It was a lesson she had taught herself in order to keep her position and respect that came with the title of Captain. “Thank you.” It came out more of a whisper but she offered Vaan a real smile for a change, not one of her emotionless ones forged from handling Lady Adrienne and her lady in waiting.
Walking inside, Dawn made sure to avoid even slightly brushing against Vaan. She could take on his mistress if she believed something was happening between then, but somethings were best left alone. Inside the library, she was greeted by the thick smell of paper and ink which made her shoulders relax as a hand reached up to run over a book shelf like a long lost lover. For a moment, she forgot who she was or why she was in the library or who she was with. In that moment, she was just a lover of books where she didn’t have to be the cold hearted bitch to snap the male guards in to attention.

Quickly Vaan followed her into the library, closing the door behind him. He did not want anyone who just so happened to pass by, heard pieces of any conversation that might follow and get the wrong end of the stick. This would easily lead to more problem, jealous from Adrienne and most likely an verbal attack upon Dawn. This would not do.
His eyes turned, following Dawn watching her closely. In some ways she reminded him of Jane. The way she drew his eyes to her even if the other ladies in the floor were breathtaking that did not matter. Books were an escape for the often busy King, the smell of the ink. The feel of the pages beneath his fingertips as he held them in his hands.
This had always been a sanctuary of his, to hide from nosy courtiers who always wanted something from him, Whether it be money, jewels or power most desired something from him and his household. Moving forward into the stacks of books, both fiction and non-fiction it was there.
He built this up from a next to nothing. On the upper floor was his own private collection of books which he had gathered over the years with Rebeckah by his side. Portraits of his former mate and lover hung up there. These were special to him, he had them painted by a friend of his. Different from the ones that hung in the gallery, these version were full of life, joy and happiness that shone in their eyes as they watched over anyone who entered that section of the library.
"Now we are in private, I insist that you call me Vaan" He told with her. His voice was softer in order to appear more approachable. Adrienne had always told him that he was unapproachable to his courts. His voice was just too cold, too distant. His mistress was trying to change him, trying to mold him into someone else into a man that he never could be.
His hand rose to rest on the weathered spine of a leather bound book. It contained the history of the King that came before him, Marcus the great, the noble and fair. Vaan couldn't help but wonder how he would be remembered. Would he remember for what he had done right or would he be remembered for his mistakes?
"I know little about you Dawn. You are a mystery to me" He said as he grasped the spine carefully, pulling it from it's space on the shelf. "You probably know more about him" He chuckled, knowing that hardly anyone knew him at all. Only a few tried to get to know the real Vaan not just the King that ruled his court with an iron fist.
Vaan was so much more than the King. He had hobbies, interested like everyone else. However all the courtiers, nobles and false friends saw was the crown that sat firmly onto top his head. It drove many to extreme lengths just to get a glance to the jewel encrusted pure gold ceremonial crown that he had fought hard for two hundred years ago.

Brushing a finger over the dark wood, her eyes skimmed over the spines while stepping a little deeper into the library but still in range of hearing in case she was needed. The tip of her finger ran over ‘Frankenstein’ then on to ‘Jane Eyre’ before coming to more modern stories. Getting lost in the different titles, Dawn jumped slightly as the door was shut. She could easily understand Vaan’s desire for privacy. Most of the time, he had none. The courtesans wanted him for either his money or power so his life was constantly being watched closely. There were enough whispers going around about Vaan sleeping with any woman aside from Adrienne that got to close, but she placed her money on it only being said to piss off his mistress. Feeling childish for getting so absorbed by the books she let her guard down, she smiled weakly at him.
Dawn knew the layout of the library like the back of her hand, the only place she had never stepped foot in was Vaan’s private area on the upper floor. Somehow the place seemed sacred to him and she didn’t want to invade his privacy more than her duties as his guard demanded. Sometimes, being in the library felt like a violation of his trust whenever he wasn’t around, but other times it seemed like he honestly didn’t mind her going in and out as she pleased.
The request to call him by his name for a change forced her to remember just how different the two of them were. She tried to make a life for herself aside from being a mother, which deep down she still wanted but doubted the right man would ever come around. While Vaan was King, trying to keep order among the wolves and humans both on the island and the world. “I shall try; I make no promise, Your…Vaan.” In the presence of her family, Dawn called the King just that, by his name. Around the nobles, guards, and Vaan that just wasn’t proper. It felt odd to say his name to his face, to be allowed to let the letters roll over her tongue like some rare wine she only got to taste once a year.
“The courts seem to think they know all about me. So there really is no mystery.” The words were said only in a tease, but they lacked the playful tone showing the small crack in Dawn’s armor where she could be hurt. The moment she had first fought with the previous captain just to be trained whispers had popped up as to why a girl would want to be a guard. She looked pretty enough for a commoner so what was the problem? Why did she have to interfere on noble’s domain? They finally saw her werewolf form and began to put pieces together in their own minds, drawing the most ridiculous conclusions. Her spine stiffened trying not to let it show on her face just how much she really knew Vaan.
“No, I never paid much attention to Markus when they spoke about him in school.” Smirking slightly while watching Vaan remove the leather bound book, she walked to the nearest window and sat down on the bay bench. It wasn’t a lie, for Dawn, Markus was a good guy who’d tried to be fair for everyone. But sadly not everyone wants to play fair. Leaning her back against the wall, she kept a good eye on him while still looking outside. It was just a pleasure to be in his company and relax just a little. “Anyways, there isn’t much to know about me.”

The sound of his name rolling off her tongue, almost seemed right. When Adrienne spoke this name, it seemed wrong and out of place. Most never had the right to speak so informally to him but when Dawn spoke this name, things just dropped into place.
Even he did not know why he had asked her to call by his name. The relationship between them was simply king and captain of the guard. However was that enough? His thoughts were getting out of hand, Vaan was not meant to think of Dawn this way.
Something inside was fighting everything he had built up, his walls were coming crushing down hard. This wall had been erected after the betrayal of his mate. Jane had quickly torn it down but her death built it up again. A look or smile was enough to threaten to send it tumbling once again.
There was truth behind her words. Most whispered about others such as Vaan but often it was all pieces of conversation they had overheard. "Maybe so but I wish to know more about my captain" He had closely watched her rise through the ranks with such interest. Every step of the way documented in his memory, it had something unique.
There had been female captains before but none like her. She was a diamond in the rough. Something truly special but it did not ever register in his mind that she was a commoner. It did not matter to him, when they were alone like the two of them were not King and loyal subject but equals.
"Markus was truly a wise king but it can get boring" He admitted, grasping the leather bound book. "Most prefer Dante and Castiel, the two brothers who waged war against one another for the throne" The tale was something he did not know all that well since it had been many years since he had looked into the history of the twins.
Turning his attention to her, taking in her posture as she leaned against the wall. He felt the urge to go over, wrap his arms around her waist and no he could not think that way about her. It was wrong. Vaan would not try to seduce Dawn into his bed like the other woman, the whores ready for him when he needed a release.
He respected Dawn too much to use and then throw her away like he had done with many woman who had come before. "I will tell you something if you tell me something" He offered, it was an olive branch for her to take. This way they would get to know one another much better.

There was no stopping the blush that warmed Dawn’s cheeks after saying His Majesty’s name to his face. It was far too informal and every sense of duty and honor she held for the king was snapping and barking at her that she needed to apology. But that would have been a waste of time since he’d requested it. A good question would have been why? In her mind, they had an easy friendship, they spoke of his family and keeping them safe and that was the extent of their conversations most days. Of course, she had daydreamed about talking to him like a real friend and not some strange King and Captain passing words. That had all stayed in her mind since even through most of the male guards claimed she had more balls then them all combined, for this man she was nothing more than another female.
Reaching up, she ran a hand through her hair trying to find something to look at besides Vaan and his intense grey eyes. Those were like a steel trap for Dawn, one look and there would be no way to contain her tongue from not saying something it shouldn’t to her king. She hated the shudder that rolled over her back when he said ‘my Captain’ making her feel precious rather than some lycan honed to a perfect skill for killing to protect him. “There’s nothing exciting to know about me, sire.” Wincing, she shook her head at the title and whispered an apology under her breath. “I’m far too use to calling you anything but Vaan.” Mostly because she wanted to keep her life in tract, Adrienne or the Chancellor would have strangled her with their hands if they knew she was calling the King by his first name like some intimate lover instead of a low life Captain.
“Yes, those two were pretty interesting but they aren’t my favorite king.” Dawn had to bite the inside of her cheek not to smile over at Vaan and she had to dig her nails into the palms of her hands not to watch him move around. If she had the time, the majority of her days would have been spent watching him walk around and fighting to keep her tongue from wagging. There wasn’t another male that she could claim had that kind of effect on her, all others were just there for her to screw for a few hours before getting back to work. Nothing to be serious about. If Vaan asked, there was little she would have done to stop him from taking her to his bed. For that, she hated her lack of will to stay strong and not act stupid. The second that thought entered her mind, she remembered who she was, a person Vaan would never go to.
“Trying to compromise?” Dawn smirked while glanced over at Vaan, trying not to laugh at his attempt to get inside her mind just a little. Somehow she knew that if he had simply asked any question she would have answered no matter the question. Not because of her loyalty to King Vaan but because of her feelings for Vaan. Licking her lips, her arms crossed over her chest just as her light brown eyes turned to the window. “I grew up on a farm, protecting my twin sister, Summer. She had a love of climbing in trees far too high and not being able to get down. I either had to catch her when she fell or climb up to convince her to work her way back down.” The words came out of her mouth with no censorship; she spoke as if she was talking to someone in her own family. She wondered if she ever told anyone her sister was her twin, everyone knew she had one since Angel was her brother in law and a few had even asked if she’d bring Summer to the palace. They all got the same response, never going to happen.

Informal or not Vaan wished to speak plainly with his normally stoic captain. She was something to be trusted unlike various other members of his court like his money hungry, power obsessed mistress. In the past when they spoken, it had only ever been about family and the problems that often arose and how to keep them safe from enemies.
Her mind was something he wanted to pick, to peel back the layers to see the real her not just the hardened solider he saw everyday. To built a friendship was what he truly desired. He watched her hand as it glided through her hair which looked soft. Vaan wanted to reach out and touch those silky locks but no he resisted. A king was not meant to act that way even if they were alone in the library with the books.
"Maybe so Dawn but I want to know more about you" He persisted with his attempt to get any information about the life she had outside the palace. The king would could say he knew more than enough about certain members of his court's life in and outside his court. However Dawn was different, he knew next to nothing about what she did outside the palace high, stone walls.
"Who was your favorite King?" He asked interested at what her answer might be. There had been many kings and queen who had past through these halls, who sat on his throne and ruled his court. Indeed he was, being diplomatic had helped him in the past. Using similar tactics might help in this situation. The next words flowed from her lips, he listened careful to each word. She was opening up to him, now this was something he had not though she would do but she had. Maybe she was finally relaxing in his presence.
Vaan did not she had a twin sister. His captain kept everything personal close to her chest locked away from the world and him. This a sign, a step in the right direction for the pair. The future looked brighter than before when it had dulled to the point where it was barely a spark in the vast darkness.

Loyal until the end, it was the one lesson her father had instilled in Dawn’s mind while growing up watching him leave to guard the palace every morning. A few times, he’d even stop his daily routine to sit down with her for a few minutes to speak about why he wouldn’t want to be doing anything else but working at the palace. It had really formed a close bond between the two of them. However, her loyalty wasn’t just to the job but the man as well. She was loyal not because she had to be but because Vaan had earned that from her. He’d never personally attacked her, nor called her out on any of her faults by being a female in a normally male’s profession. If anything, he’d been silently encouraging her since the day she first meet him as a young lycan of barely 20. This talk between them had been had been a long time coming and she sort of wish she’d spoke to him sooner, not as his Captain but as a friend who cared about him. Maybe then he wouldn’t have been so blinded by Lady Adrienne’s true self for so long.
“You might not like what you find out.” It was meant to come out playfully but Dawn knew inside of her was a river of molting fiery anger and rage ready to be unleashed on any stupid enough to rise against her, her family, or the king. And sometimes she couldn’t always control that anger; those times resulted in her swiftly making an exit of the palace towards the woods to release a fraction of her rage. She wasn’t sure she wanted anyone to see that side of her, to see how much strength to kept trapped behind a strong wall of will power to prevent her from hurting someone she cared about. While training with the guards she always had to take extra precautions, the only expectation being Angel who could take whatever she dished out and serve her the same.
“My favorite king, I’ll keep to myself until I feel you won’t laugh. My favorite queen would have to be Queen Savannah.” Her mate, King Victor, had been injured severely by hunters and many had thought he would die. A few had tried to even convince the queen to let them kill him so they could go ahead and find a new king to replace him. The Queen ignored them, ruled in her mates place while at night staying by his side. When he finally did recover they quickly slaughtered those few who had tried to turn the queen against her mate. That kind of loyalty Dawn knew better than any. It felt so natural to speak to Vaan as an equal it made her fear what would happen the second they left the library. Where would they stand then? There was no place for a King to be friends with his female Captain without someone getting the wrong idea. Even if that idea sounded wonderful to her ears it would likely bring about a hell storm for Vaan.
“Now, my dear friend, I told you two things about myself, three if you count my sister being my twin. What about your end of the deal?” It would be a feat if he could tell her something she didn’t know about him either from watching over him for so many years or from listening very closely to conversations. This time, she didn’t smirk, didn’t grin but really smiled at Vaan, likely the first one she’d given to him in so many years if not the first smile she’d ever given him.

Her words tugged at his curiosity. He had not know what she was implying, he hated being kept in the dark about anything that might affect him directly. At the end of the day he was still the King of lycans on this rather small island. "Maybe so Dawn but I still wish to know more about you" He dug further, wanting to break through her resistance to speak about herself.
Often he would watch the training sessions from a distance, making sure he was far enough not to be seen or smelt by Angel or Dawn. This was becoming more frequent in the past month, Vaan could not understand the need to return and watch her. How fiercely she was, inspired him but also caused his brother wolf to make itself known. Dawn was becoming a trigger for the wolf, it want and tried to break the leash he had placed around it's neck. Vaan would not give up control, not know.
Ah Queen Savannah, she was something special. A true alpha female who fought her mate, delicate like a flower but deadly as snake, waiting to strike. "Yes, a queen to be proud of. I can seem a similar fire burn within you eyes Dawn" He commented absentmindedly. These days such things would flow like a river from his lips when she was near. Adrienne never caused his charm like Dawn did. His mistress well that was too easy, Vaan could woo her without trying but it grew boring quickly.
Ah yes he had promised that he would reveal to her things she did not know about him, if she revealed something about herself. "Well I have no siblings but this is common knowledge" Most of the court knew this fact. "What the courtiers don't know is who I was before I became King" He started, sighing as he thought back to a time before he took his place in history and upon the throne. It had been a long time since he last thought of the past, it felt like it had been another lifetime, a past life if you will.
"I was once the son of two unranked lycans. My father was a blacksmith, my mother a seamstress" He missed such simple times, Vaan had lost contact with his parents over the years. They had just faded into memory. "I helped my father in his workshop, training to one day take over the small shop" Never before had he revealed this much about his past "However my fate changed the day I meet Rebeckah"His voice slowly turned cold at very mention of his former mate and queen.

Leaning her head back against the wall, Dawn’s eyes connected with Vaan’s not in the least bit concerned if he thought she was trying to challenge him because they both knew she didn’t care for power. She had become Captain by mere accident, she would have been content being an average guard on the wall just as much as she was content being the captain. “I’d like to know more about you as well, Vaan.” There, since they were being friends and acting without protocol while no one was watching those words wouldn’t be so frowned upon. A twinkle in her eyes might have revealed an underline meaning to those words of how deeply she cared about him, but as long as he didn’t ask she wasn’t going to slip into her Captain mask very soon.
A light, half hearted laugh left Dawn’s lip at his words comparing her to Queen Savannah. The only similarity she could think of was how loyal they were to their close friends. “I think you’re imagining things. I just do my job, there’s no fire in these eyes.” But that didn’t mean she didn’t appreciate the compliment and it made her wonder just how closely he watched her when she wasn’t looking. The only time she wasn’t shadowing Vaan’s back was during training of the other guards, those times her mind was focused on preparing them while trying not to break more bones then she needed to get the lesson across. More than half her mind was locked in on the other guards; the rest was trying to make sure no one attempted anything stupid just because she appeared to be occupied. Dawn reached over and unlatched the window to let in the cool night air to clear her nose of Vaan’s scent. It was completely surrounding her, cutting off the logical thinking part of her brain to the point she just wanted to smile stupidly at the man before her until one of them was forced to leave the room for one reason or another. The whole damn library was coated in his smell and it was clouding her normally well formulated thoughts. Without thinking, her body instantly moved to block Vaan from the window just in case someone was waiting to attack. Her back now to the window, she got comfortable on the bay window seat, facing him but keeping a good ear out for any intruders outside. At least the gentle breeze coming in through the window cleared her nose of the King’s scent.
“You as a blacksmith…” Dawn chuckled under her breath, watching Vaan closely hoping he didn’t think she was insulting him. “It’s not that hard picturing you doing that in my mind.” The icy tone that came when he mentioned his run away queen slipped over her causing a shudder to roll down her spine catching a glimpse of the warrior the King truly was. Her wolf seemed to purr at the sight, even smile while at the same time wanting to make him forget about Rebeckah. Pushing off from the bay seat at the window, she slowly walked over to him and placed a tender hand over his cheek wishing to erase the pain his former queen had brought him while at the same time knowing her actions had made him a better lycan. “For what it’s worth, I’m glad you met her. If you hadn’t, there would be no Henry or Richard for me to chase around the town. And I doubt we would have meet.” Vaan having met and been with Rebeckah might have been a curse in his mind and parts of it were the same for Dawn, but she was happy to have meet him and grown to love his sons…their flaws and all.

It had been said, that the eyes are the window to the soul, hers seemed closed at times. It had her eyes that drew him in, they were stormy at times and icy cold at others. Dawn was an emotional hurricane much like himself.
The smile that spread across his lips, widened at the thought for being friends with Dawn. To get to know one another was something he never dreamed possible. The Kings and Queens who came before him, would maintain a distance from the guard. It was meant to be a professional relationship between Royalty and those who would lay down their life for them. Vaan was about to cross a line others did not.
"I must have been mistaken" He quickly responded without thinking, feeling a tad silly for saying such things. In the future he would be careful with his words or try to at least. Dawn was not another woman trying to butter him up, with flowery words and empty promises. She was a respectable member of the guard who did not need compliments from their King.
Fresh, cool air rushed through the now opened window, circulating around the room, chasing away the scent of the books and of Dawn. His brother wolf seemed to calm down, her scent no longer hung heavily in the air mixing with his. Tongues would not wag and talk about the King spending time with the captain. Vaan would see to this personally.
Most would never believed that their King had once been a commoner, had once worked with his hands creating weapons. "Most courtiers would brush it off but I speak the truth" He admitted, knowing the very nature of those who walked trough the many halls of his court. Most were such fickle and selfish creatures but there were a fair few noble courtiers he trusted.
Nodding in agreement with her touching statement "If I had never met her, I would never be the man and King i am today, nor would I have two sons who I loved deeply" he announced proudly. Vaan cared not that she knew how he felt about his children. Richard was the model of a hardworking, perfect son. Where as Henry was a disappointment at times but that did not change the way he felt about his oldest.
"You know if I was still blacksmith, our paths would never have crossed" He suddenly said, it was statement out of the blue but it was true. If Vaan had never mated with Rebeckah, he would never have felt the urge to enter the fight to be King. He would have been over a thousand miles away, working hard in that tiny workshop craving weapons without a care in the world about the politics of lycan society. It made him wonder for a moment but this was his world now.
It has not escaped his notice, her touch. The way her hand had caressed his cheek but he had to brush it off, pretend it never occurred. Vaan was not in the mood for rumors to start, for her reputation and character to be tainted by him and the vipers that wandered in and out of his court each and every day. His brother wolf growled angrily at his cold response. It wanted to be closer to the often closed off captain, it wanted her in his arms here and now.
However that never could be. Society forbid such a union, between King and commoner, between Master and Guard. Such pairing never survived the pressure and secrecy that must be. Vaan was certain he would never cross that line even if it killed his heart to do so.
