Standing tall and proud, Dawn kept her eyes focused straight ahead with her arms locked at the palms behind her back. Her feet were slightly parted in a relaxed at attention stance, ready to move if there was a problem from any nobles or other party members in the throne room. The King had already left for the day, leaving the nobles in the room to talk for awhile before they too started filling out a handful at a time. In his own castle, Vaan was well protected and didn’t usually want personal guards breathing down his back. The rare times he did was, of course, when he left the palace. While the other guards had started to relax their stances, she growled low under her breath and they instantly snapped back to attention. Laziness wasn’t in her dictionary and she would erase it from any guard who was under her as well. So what if she took her job serious? It was the only way a female Lycan could keep her position as Captain. There was no way she could be her true free self and remain at the top under the King, the Prince, and the Duke of Elysian. The only way to play this game was as a soldier. And Dawn hated to loss. When the last noble was finally gone, she nodded to the guards around the room, granting them permission to leave. “Return to your quarters, get some sleep. You should have seven hours until the change.” By the change, she meant when they switched guards out who had been on duty all day with fresher, more awake ones. Watching each one leave, Dawn did a quick scan and sniff of the throne room finding it clean of any lingering scents before she left as well, the very last one out of the room. She was always the first in and the last out. Exiting the throne room, her heels clicked on the tiles while her leather jacket crackled with it slight swing of her arms. Each guard she past in the hall was covered in the proper uniform; a keen eye ran over each one to check that nothing was out of place. Keeping a calm face, she passed by corridors of nobles sucking faces with people they definitely weren’t mated too, but since none were Adrienne or the Prince she didn’t even pass them a second glance. If it was the Prince, she’d be polite enough to recommend he take his play thing to his room. If it was Adrienne, Dawn would likely slap the whore because… Pushing the rest of that thought away, she let her nose lead her deeper into the heart of the palace as the smell of sweet bread and barbeque chicken teased her nose. The last meal she’d taken part of was some sharp cheddar cheese she had popped in her mouth at breakfast and that had been nearly fifteen hours ago at seven. Walking down the steps, Dawn pushed open the Kitchen door and greeted the head chief politely. She’d known the Lycan since first arriving to train so many years ago. It was amazing the way some things changed. A dark thought entered her mind causing her to be reminded that some things did change and not always for the good. Sitting down at one of the tables, Dawn was pleased to be handed a plate full of meat, bread, and some fresh berries. “Thank you.” There was a weak smile on her face before she began to bite into the chicken leg. If she had less control over her actions, she might have moaned the second the warm meat touched her tongue, however she only complimented the chief. A cup of wine was placed next to her plate making her nod again in thanks.

Today was one of those rare days when Andreas didn't have time to check up on Mary. So that meant that she got to roam about the King's castle, though she was followed by Dumb and Dumber. Not that she would every say that to their faces, but hey, what Andreas didn't know didn't hurt her. She was still somewhat surprised that she still had enough of her old self that she was spitfire in her mind at least. On the outside she was pretty much the scared little wife, that everybody expected. In side, she wanted to fight back with all she had, make Andreas love her, but she knew that would disappoint her parents, and after everything they had ever done for her she couldn't do that. As Mary let her mind wonder, her stomach started to growl. She sighed, she had forgotten to again today. She hadn't really been eating much the last couple of weeks. She had just had another miscarry, only a few weeks before. This time though she hadn't told Andreas, she didn't want to get his hopes up. She was starting to think that she was never going to be able to carry a child to term. She shook her head to clear those thoughts from her mind. It was better not to dwell on the past. She made her way to the kitchens to see if she couldn't get some food. As she walked in she noticed the Captain of the guards, Dawn. She didn't know the woman that well, but she knew of her. She actually admired Dawn, wishing that she had the same strength that she did. She nodded her head toward Dawn and took a set at the table next to hers. Mary didn't want to interrupt Dawn's meal, but a part of her still craved to be by a woman, that she knew wasn't sleeping with her husband. Yes, she knew. It was supposed to be the best kept secret, for only her, but she wasn't stupid.

The warm meal felt wonderful in Dawn’s empty stomach as she savored the flavorful chicken that was washed down by the rich red wine. In spite of her surroundings, a smile began to form on her lips while closing her eyes for but a moment. Doing so was dangerous even in the palace with people always at each others’ throats to climb the power ladder. Opening her eyes, she nodded as the chief placed a slice of fresh chocolate cake in front of her after giving her wink. There were no real emotions behind her eyes knowing what the male wanted but she wouldn’t give him. Deep down, she had a man she wanted, but it was never meant to be.
So she would except her place in life and be happy she had won her goal to be Captain instead of a lower guard. It was a miracle she was the captain since her family held no titles, no real land aside from a couple of acres in the country that had been passed down for generations on her father’s side. On her mother’s side, they were only free roaming Lycans who lived by the moon and her sway on their bodies. They loved the freedom that came with having no land to guard or homes to tend to. Her mother only settled down because of Dawn and Summer being born, even then she was sure her mother longed for those old days.
A new scent appeared ahead of Lady Mary forcing Dawn to look up, stand in respect before nodding. “Good day, My Lady.” She didn’t return to her seat until Mary had sat down. It was impossible for her not to know practically every single noble lady or lord with all the time she spent watching the King’s back. However, Lady Mary really caused her deep concern that she didn’t allow to show on her face naturally. She felt for the woman, Dawn really did. She didn’t want to even imagine being married to a man who didn’t share the same feelings for her or treated her like some prized object to lock away in a vault. Wiping her face with a napkin, she picked up a berry and popped it into her mouth having to slow down on the food since the lady was present and not just the other servants.
Dawn did wonder what Lady Mary was doing in the kitchen. It was well known how much her husband freaked out if he even thought she was off wondering on her own. Luna forbid should another man even look at her with an ounce of desire. “Would you like food, my lady?” She nodded to the chief and his underlings who were running around baking, chopping, and preparing everything under the sun for the King and the other nobles.

Mary smiled when Dawn greeted her. "Captain please, I only have the title Countess because of my husband. Treat me as any other person that you know." She said. She stiffened a little when she heard the two guards following her growl under their breaths. She was never aloud out and the one time she actually got some time, they were going to ruin it. She didn't say anything though, far to scared to anger Andreas. She could take a beating from him, she knew it for she had many times before, but she really didn't want to have another round so close to the miscarriage.
"That would be lovely." She said in response to Dawn asking if she would like food. "I seem to keep forgetting that I actually need to eat." She said with a slight laugh and a shake of her head. She was so forgetful sometimes that she would lose her head if it wasn't attached to her shoulders. She smiled as a female servant put a plate of food down in front of her. It was crazy that every male in the kingdom, knew of her husbands rage, and only the King and his sons would even talk to or look at her. She wondered why Andreas got so mad if men looked at her. So what, he should feel proud that he had her and would never lose her.
"So how has your day been, Captain?" She asked, she didn't want to make Dawn feel uncomfortable but she really needed someone other then herself to talk to.

Dawn looked down at her meal for a moment at those words. How did she treat other people? Her family was really the only ones to ever see her laugh or show any emotion besides anger or nothing at all. “I can’t say I treat any one different then what I just did.” There was nothing special about her, she had been raised a commoner, came from a long line of hard workers, but in the eyes of the nobles she was less than worthy of her captain’s title. Of course, that never stopped her from protecting their lives even with all the rude remarks they made behind her back. It didn’t bother her that much. She was a natural protector, stronger and quicker than most women and a near equal to men. The growl from the body guards caused her to pass a steady eye over the males. They looked strong; ready to fight at a moment’s notice surely they had earned their guard position.
The way Lady Mary stiffened when her guards appeared made Dawn feel terrible that her husband had such a grip on her. It wasn’t right for a female to fear the man she had pledged her love for him at marriage. A true mate wouldn’t make his love afraid to even look another person in the eyes; he should be protecting her, loving her. Leaving her little rant in her mind, she couldn’t help but smile softly when the lady admitted to being absent minded. What did the she-wolf do that caused her to be so forgetful? In her line of work, Dawn wasn’t allowed to be forgetful. A slip up meant a mess up, a mess up meant someone trying to fight her for her position, which had happened once and she had slaughtered the man.
When the food was placed before her, Dawn turned back to her own and picked up the sweet bread to take a bite from it. It was already full of honey and generous helpings of butter and in her mind, perfect. If she had to die right then, the Captain would have been happy to keel over since her stomach was full of yummyness. The question caused her to look up, baffled that a lady was even talking to her. It wasn’t that she thought all of them were terrible, a few were decent but there were more than that who needed to be slapped up side the face. Adrienne instantly came to her mind but she had a feeling she was a little bias on that one. “It’s been fine, my lady.” Fine was an overstatement, but she wasn’t going into details with Lady Mary only because there was nothing the lady would want to hear.
“You haven’t been in court lately; I hope you are feeling well.” It was sad that Dawn took a great deal of notice about who was in court and who wasn’t. She liked to think it was to keep a keen eye over every noble who might try something stupid. But it was really to keep her mind away from staring at King Vaan and daydreaming while on duty. Luna, she had it bad for a man completely out of her range and rank.

Mary was a little saddened by Dawn's words. Was she just saying that because she didn't have any friends, or because she just knew how Andreas was and didn't want to deal with that. Mary still hated it that she had no one that she could talk to, or be herself with. Maddox encouraged it, but only on those rare moments when she was actually alone with her brother-in-law. Mary knew of the things some of the nobles said behind Dawn's back. She had just heard some a few minutes ago, and it really pissed her off that just because Dawn was a woman, and a commoner, that thought she wasn't good enough to be the Captain. Mary disagreed wholeheartedly. If Dawn wasn't fit to run the guards, she wouldn't have been able to defeat the previous Captain.
Mary inhaled the intoxicating smell of the roasted chicken and potatoes that the servant girl had put down in front of her. She picked up her fork and cut into one of the potatoes and smiled as she watched the steam rolling out of the center. The first fork full in her mouth was like Heaven. This was one of the many reasons that she liked to come to court, the food. The cook was so amazing, everything that was made was delicious. She was also glad that she didn't live at the palace, because if she did she would be as big as a house, and then Andreas really never would love her.
She took a drink and wiped her mouth before she answered Dawn's next question. She knew she couldn't tell her the truth, not with the guards right over her shoulder, so she told her a little white lie. "My stomach had been not wanting to corporate for a couple weeks, but luckily that pasted." She said with a little sadness in her eyes. She hadn't really eaten at all after the miscarriage, it was the only time that she had been glad that Andreas was too busy in his own life to worry about the way she was acting.

Dawn shifted in her chair without realizing the motion was out of the uncomfortable presence of the noble Lady Mary. It wasn’t her fault she was a noble, at least she had to reminder herself that otherwise she would have bolted for the door and not finished her meal. Most of the time, she kept her distance from the nobles. Not because she thought she was better than them, in fact it was the opposite for the most part. They thought they were better than her and Dawn just didn’t like having a pissing contest with people she could eat alive. Rubbing a hand over her face, it slowly began to rise in her mind her strange sleeping habits…or lack of sleeping. There was just too much on her mind between her twin sister trying to get pregnant and failing, King Vaan meeting with the noble houses almost every other day, and the guards slacking when she wasn’t looking. In general, it was just a stressful week for her. And she didn’t allow herself to have any fun until her work was completely which most of the time her work was never done.
As another plate was brought for the lady, Dawn focused on her own chicken and went back to munching on the meat. It practically melted in her mouth making her want to moan as it eased her stomach’s desire for substance. Sipping from the wine, she closed her eyes enjoying the liquid roll over her tongue to quench her thirst. The small quiet moment was far much more than she normally allowed herself to have, most evening meals were eat while she was running around the castle between guards, the throne room, and wherever else she was needed. It felt really good to be off her feet for a couple of minutes.
Eyeing the guards, Dawn didn’t believe a word that came out of Mary’s mouth about her stomach being upset. There was far too much darkness to the woman’s eyes, the way she held herself made her a little suspicious as to why she needed to lie. It took her a moment to remember her place wasn’t as this woman’s body guard; she already had a body to guard…well a couple if you got technical. “Did you go to see a doctor?” The question had nothing to do with the ‘sickness’ in Lady Mary’s stomach and more about whatever was really wrong with her.
