Staring at Vaan, Dawn could feel her own wolf pacing back and forth in her mind, restless as if in need of something. Her sister wolf only ever got like this around the King, she’d acted like this for years and up until a few months ago, the Captain had been convinced everything was under control. However, the more she heard Vaan and Adrienne arguing the more her wolf was awoken for the lazy state she had trapped it in. It was why she’d opened the window to clear her nose of his scent. The fresh air soothed the beast for a little while. Of course, sooner or later if she stayed her wolf would demand and whimper for her to move closer.
“It was still a nice compliment to hear anyways.” Being thrown a compliment wasn’t something Dawn was use to but she enjoyed hearing them anyways. More so from Vaan than any other male. Not letting that thought for any farther, she threw it straight from her mind not wanting to even think why her wolf wanted to be a playful pup around him but a dominating bitch around any other male that tried to put her in her ‘place’.
“I should go check on the guards on the walls.” Knowing she had over stepped her bounds, Dawn decided it was time to leave the King be before she made a bigger fool of herself. Pulling her hand away from Vaan’s warm cheek, her emotions were thrown back in a padlock box while she placed her hand at her side. Once more, her mask of pure emotionless Captain of the Guards was back on. That didn’t stop her wolf from snarling at her for being such a coward. Bowing to him out of habit, she walked around him towards the door but stopped when her fingers curled around the knob. “For the record…my favorite king has always been you.”
Dawn opened the door and slipped out before gently shutting it behind her. Back in the hall, she was shoved back into the realization that what her heart wanted wasn’t in her reach and never would be. There were far too many compilations for her to pursue a man so far out of her league they weren’t even on the same playing field. Chewing down hard on the inside of her cheek, she fought with her wolf for a second to hold back the sad howl it wanted to release. Pushing away from the library door, she turned and headed down the hall, vanishing into the dark corridor.
